Clapper (Kallen)
Bell knowledge · Parts & function
The clapper hangs inside a bell or Treichel. When moved, it strikes the wall and makes the bell body sound.
What do Kallen, Challen or Knallen mean?
Various regional names are used for the clapper, including Kallen, Challen, Haller and Knallen. They refer to the moving part that strikes inside.
The bell and clapper must match
The clapper’s length, shape, weight and suspension influence where and how it strikes the bell body. A random replacement will therefore not automatically suit every bell.
Suitable replacement clappers are available directly in the online shop. Choose the version for your bell or Treichel model. They are supplied ready to fit. If you are unsure, the model name and photographs of the bell, its inner suspension and existing clapper help us identify the right one.
If the bell body or suspension is damaged, have the bell checked by a specialist workshop, such as a smithy, before further use. They can assess whether and how it can be repaired.
